About

Since the 1980s successive British Governments, local authorities and a large and growing number of voluntary and community sector organisations of all types have developed and run projects designed to promote community cohesion and encourage better understanding and good relations between people of different religious backgrounds and beliefs living in the United Kingdom.

The successes achieved indicate the potential for more work of this type: we still live in a country where the security, prosperity and general happiness of citizens and the ability of people of different backgrounds and beliefs to live alongside one another in mutual respect and friendship can be further enhanced by addressing issues such as community separation, misunderstanding, lack of knowledge or poor communication.

Faith groups and their potential partners may not have the confidence, capacity and tools to engage productively with the wider community or to counteract a natural tendency towards suspicion of the ‘other’.  Alongside the many excellent bodies and initiatives that exist to promote good interfaith relations, there is space for a social enterprise dedicated to helping faith and belief groups reach out to their neighbours and to build bridges with the public sector and civil society.

That is the purpose of Faith in Society.
